Miss Smith's 4th Grade Spring Street Elementary
Miss Smith was a new teacher and they created a new 4th grade class for her. I was originally placed in Mrs. Cannon's class. She was the teacher who put me back into 3rd grade and I think she sensed I was a little afraid of her. As soon as they created the new class, Mrs. Cannon selected me as one of her students who would switch to the new class. Looking back on it, I think she may have been one of the most insightful teachers I ever had. Having moved from the rural Covington school to Atlanta, I was behind the other kids and it was the best thing for me to repeat 3rd grade. I was also one of the younger kids in 4th grade and small for my age to boot. I did a lot better in the 3rd grade and immediately made lots of friends. I think I would have done fine in Mrs. Cannon's class but I was a whole lot more comfortable in Miss Smith's class. I wish I could have told Mrs. Cannon how much I appreciedated her help. Perhaps she could tell by the way I progressed after leaving her class. Like so many people who influence our lives, I owe her a lot.
