The Pace Guest Room

Deborah and I decided to name the two guest bedrooms. One was named for named for her family, Pace, and one for my family, Gardner. After all, we wanted both families to visit us constantly. The Pace room is the room that nearly killed our purchase of the home. It was in terrible condition. The walls and ceiling were falling in. At some point in the past, there had been some significant water damage that had weakened in the plaster and caused it to separate from the wood lathe. Deborah was ready to move on the the next house when she beheld the mess. It was all Phil could do to get her to see the potential and to educate her about the miracles of "sheetrock". As it turned out, the Pace room is one of the most charming rooms in the home. It was painted a pale lavender with a white hyacinth trim. Deborah decorated the room with purple ascents. The room gets wonderful early morning sun which steams in through three large antique glass windows. The Pace room is one of the two rooms in the house where pine wood was used for the flooring.

Office

Deborah and I selected the room with the best view and the most light as our office. We knew we would be spending most of our time in this room. At some time in the past, the room had functioned as an upstairs kitchen. Joe Hubbuch told us that part of the floor had been covered with linoleum that they used when doing science experiments. Even after the pine floors had been refinished, the outline of this area is still visible. Mr. Hubbuch had replaced the large windows facing the backyard with sliding aluminum windows. That may have been the rage at the time but, to Deborah and I, it was totally out of place with the age and style of the house. Dick Edgerton, an artisan just south of Chattanooga in Flintstone, Georgia, was introduced to us. His company specialized in the manufacture of custom windows and doors. We understand that he is only one of three in the entire country who provide this service. He visited the home and took measurements to match the existing casement windows that ran along the side of the room. When the new windows were installed, the impact was dramatic. They made the room seem like we were in a sun porch. From our office we can watch and listen to the abundant birds in the area. Deborah is a avid bird watcher and this suits her perfectly. The office was wired for multiple phone lines to support concurrent voice and fax requirements. We also added DSL service for our internet and email requirements. When working from home, communication with the outside world is critical.
